This is Your Gateway to Success

The Vandal Success Program (VGP) is a first-year success program at the University of Idaho. Students take several general education courses together (including English 101, 102, and Communications 101), receive additional advising contact, and have expanded access to academic support. Students in this cohort-based program benefit from frequent interactions with dedicated faculty and staff as they help foster development of strong academic success habits. As students graduate from the program during their second semester, they decide on a major and are transitioned to an advisor within their chosen field.

Your Best Decision

The Vandal Gateway program is an opportunity to become a student, get good grades, and learn life skills.

“VGP has the best faculty and staff working for us. They care about the [Gateway] students and will do whatever they can to help you. This program isn’t just about grades; it’s about being a better person and working hard in every aspect of life — and Gateway supports you every step of the way.”

— Ryan P., ’24

The Gateway program recognizes each student as an individual and provides customized support. Together with campus programs exploration, you’ll find where you feel at home — where you feel you “fit.” Being part of the Vandal Gateway Program (VGP) means you:

  •  Learn how to navigate the college maze.
  • Receive an individualized foundation for academic success that includes social activities that enrich your overall collegiate experience, broaden your interests, and hone your leadership abilities.
  • Have opportunities to learn career readiness skills because they are interwoven into your cohort-based classes.
  • Work with professional advisors and peer mentors to guide, empower, and help you succeed – academically and personally.
  • Are part of a great community of students.
  • Learn life-long skills that are valuable after you graduate, as you begin your career and beyond.
