Confucianism has taken a strong hold in East Asia for centuries, leaving distinct legacies in China, Korea and Japan. But it has also been having significant impact in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In the turn towards the 21st century, we see new developments not only in countries where Confucianism has previously left strong impressions, but also in other parts of the world. Based on ethnographic data, this talk introduces the most recent developments of Confucianism as a religious and ritual tradition in diverse societies.
Anna Sun is Associate Professor of Sociology and Asian studies at Kenyon College, and Visiting Professor at the Harvard Divinity School (2018-19). She is currently Vice President of the Society for the Study of Chinese Religions, and the Co-Chair of the Chines Religions Unit of the American Academy of Religion.
Sun's book Confucianism as a World Religion: Contested Histories and Contemporary Realities (Princeton University Press, 2013) has received two book awards: the Distinguished Book Award of the Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association and the Best First Book in the History of Religion Award of the American Academy of Religion. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Social Life of Prayer in Contemporary Urban China.
