Spring 2019 Coeur d’Alene Chinese Language Course Offerings
COURSES: We offer Chinese language and Chinese culture classes. See listings below for details. Please read course descriptions to identify which level is appropriate for your needs. For further guidance, please ask your current UICI instructor or email confucius@uidaho.edu or call 208-885-7110.

LOCATION: All classes will be held at U of I Coeur d’ Alene Campus, 1031 N. Academic Way, Coeur d’ Alene, ID 83814.
FEES: Course fees are listed below each class description.
PAYMENT: Payment of course fees will be accepted in cash or checks made out to University of Idaho Confucius Institute on the first day of class. Prepayment online with credit/debit card option available.
REFUND POLICY: Refunds will not be granted after the end of the first week of class.
COURSE DATES:
- Spring Trimester: Week of January 14, 2019 through Week of April 15, 2019 (no class Feb 4-8 or March 11-15).
- Summer Trimester: Week of April 29, 2019 through Week of July 15, 2019
Spring 2019 Chinese Language Offerings
Mandarin I
This level is appropriate for students who have no previous Chinese learning experience. This class will teach students Chinese pronunciation using Pinyin and tones. Students will learn full Chinese Pinyin, some Chinese characters, vocabulary and simple sentence structures. After this course students will master some easy sentences to make a short conversation and some of them could meet the level I of HSK
Section 1: Wednesday and Thursday, 5:45-6:45 p.m.
Fee: $100
Mandarin II
This level is appropriate for students who previously took UICI's Mandarin I course. It is also appropriate for students who already have a basic Chinese language foundation (1-2 semesters of Mandarin). Students will work on pronunciation and tones in spoken Chinese and continue learning new sentence structures as well as vocabulary. Students will read short sentences using pinyin and Chinese characters, write simple sentences in Chinese while learning more Chinese characters. After this course students will be able to make a short conversation and may be ready to pass the HSK level 2.
Section 1: Mondays, 5:45-7:50 p.m. Short break will be provided.

Mandarin III
This level is appropriate for students who previously took UICI's Mandarin II course. It is also appropriate for students who already have a basic Chinese language foundation (2-4 semesters of Mandarin). Students will work on pronunciation and tones in spoken Chinese. The class will continue learning new sentence structures as well as vocabulary. Students will read sentences using pinyin and Chinese characters. Students will learn more characters and be able to compose short paragraphs. This course is taken to align with the necessary vocabulary and grammar to pass HSK level 3.
Section 1: Wednesday and Thursdays, 6:50-7:50 p.m.

Advanced Mandarin
This level is appropriate for students who have previously taken Mandarin V course. It is also appropriate for students who have 4+ years of Chinese language education. Class will be taught fully in Mandarin. Students will use their Chinese listening and speaking skills to pose questions, debate, and converse with their classmates. Students will learn higher level Chinese vocabulary through written passages. Students will compose short essays in Chinese characters. Students will work on perfecting their grammar and pronunciation through classroom activities.
Section 1: Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Reading and Writing Mandarin
This level is appropriate for students who previously taken a UICI Mandarin course. It is also appropriate for students who show highly interested in Chinese Characters or special reading and writing training while have good listening ability. Class will be taught mostly in Mandarin. The class will work on the ability of reading and writing Chinese. Students will learn how to write Chinese Characters and read and write short articles totally in Chinese characters.
Section 1: Tuesday, 6:50-7:50 p.m.

Youth Friendly Mandarin classes
The course will focus on giving students (age appropriate for 8 to 12 years old) basic exposure to Chinese. The students will learn full Chinese pinyin, simple Chinese words and short greeting sentences through mixed Chinese culture and language class. This class will focus more on speaking and listening ability, and giving the basic learning of Chinese language and characters.
Section 1 (no prior experience)-Tuesday, 4:15-5:15 p.m.
Section 2 (prior Chinese experience) -Mondays, 4:15-5:15 p.m.
Fee: $75 dollars
Kids Fun Chinese
The course will focus on giving students ( age appropriate for 4 to 7 years old) basic exposure to Chinese. The students will learn some Chinese pinyin, simple Chinese words and short greeting sentences through songs, games, Chinese style crafts and other fun. This class will focus more on speaking and listening ability.
Section 1 -Tuesday 5:45-6:45 p.m.
Fee: $75 dollars
Chinese Culture Offerings:
