Asian Studies Minor

The Asian Studies Minor offered through the University of Idaho is overseen by the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences' Modern Language and Cultures department and the University of Idaho Confucius Institute.

The Asian Studies Minor is an option for University of Idaho students majoring in other subject areas and desire to complement their chosen field with additional specialized coursework. This option may be particularly beneficial to students pursuing majors in anthropology, art, business, dance, education, English, history, interdisciplinary studies, international studies, music, philosophy, political science, recreation, sociology, teaching English as a second language or theatre arts.

The Asian Studies Minor requirements

  • 2 semesters of Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese, etc.)
    • or one semester of approved study abroad in Asia
  • 20 credits from the following*
    • Anthropology 220: Peoples of the World
    • Anthropology 261: Language and Culture
    • Communication 335: Intercultural Communication
    • Geography 200: World Regional Geography
    • History 180: Introduction to East Asian History
    • History 481: America's Wars in Asia
    • History 482: Japan, 1600 to Present
    • History 484: Modern China, 1840s to Present
    • History 485: Chinese Social and Cultural History
    • International Studies 325: The Contemporary Muslim World
    • Philosophy 307: Buddhism
    • Political Science 205: Comparative Politics
    • Political Science 237: International Politics
    • Political Science 420: Introduction to Asian Politics
    • Theatre 467: Asian Theatre History

* No more than 9 credits can be taken in one discipline, and no more than 6 credits in a student's major. 9 credits of upper-division coursework is required.
