Becoming A Writing Tutor
Become a Writing Center Tutor!
The Writing Center is looking for excellent students with a strong background in writing and an interest in helping other students.
To become a writing tutor, students must take English 402: Internship in Tutoring Writing. Students enroll in English 402 by permission only. The minimum qualifications are completion of the first-year writing requirement (English 102) and a minimum GPA of 3.3. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply.
Students in English 402 will learn about techniques and theories involved in tutoring writing, approaching writing as a process, evaluating and responding to drafts, and working with a diversity of student writers. Starting the fifth week of the semester until the last week of class, students also work in the Writing Center for four hours a week as part of the course requirements. After completing English 402, students are eligible to apply for a part-time paid position as a writing tutor.
The application deadline for Fall Semester 2020 is Friday, April 10. However, early applications are welcome! To apply, submit the following to either the English department office (Brink 200) or Jamaica Ritcher in the Writing Center (ISUB 323A):
- A letter of interest
- Two writing samples (graded preferably)
- The names of two faculty members willing to provide a strong recommendation
The final step is an interview. To schedule the interview—or to ask questions about the class or application process—contact Jamaica Ritcher by email (email@example.com) or phone (208-885-4300), or stop by and ask for her in the Writing Center.
