Inspire Idaho is an award-winning educational initiative providing free, future-ready skills development for Idaho residents who want to participate in the rapidly growing app economy.
Swift is a general-purpose programming language developed by Apple, Inc. for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, Linux and z/OS.
“App Development with Swift” is a book from Apple, Inc.’s Everyone Can Code curriculum. It is a free download from Apple Books to teach the principles of programming and iOS application development using Swift. Participants learn from a curriculum developed by Apple engineers with the guidance and support of program mentors and experts. Ultimately, participants will gain the skills needed to fully develop iOS apps using Apple’s Xcode.
Inspire Idaho is for any individual who wants to achieve basic proficiency in building apps with Swift. This is a “non-majors” course and is recommended for anyone who aspires to acquire or enhance app development skills without the time or financial investment required by more comprehensive coverage of computer science concepts. Inspire Idaho is designed for all Idaho citizens to have the opportunity to participate in the new knowledge economy.
Coding experience is NOT required to participate in the program. The Everyone Can Code curriculum is designed for all individuals who may not have coding experience but want to create apps.
Apple designed the Everyone Can Code curriculum to consist of a series of books available to download. First time coders find Swift Playgrounds to be an interactive and fun way to get started before beginning “App Development with Swift.” However, it is not necessary to prepare for Inspire Idaho through additional coursework.
A MacBook capable of running macOS10.14 or newer with Wi-Fi capabilities, an installed web browser (i.e. Safari, Chrome, Firefox) and the ability to watch videos. You will be instructed to install Xcode and Apple Books. Once files are downloaded, independent work can be completed offline.
We strongly encourage participants to take advantage of favorable purchase and lease options through Inspire Idaho. For those unable to obtain their own device, Inspire Idaho offers a device lending program. Approved participants can borrow a MacBook Air from our MacBook Lending Library for the duration of the program training (180-hours or approximately one year). These devices are available to take offsite and contain the apps/files necessary to complete the curriculum.
Yes, you can purchase a MacBook Air 13” for $849.99 online at the University of Idaho VandalStore or by calling 208-885-5518.
By the end of the 180-hour course, you will be able to design and develop your own iOS app. Throughout the program, you will learn how to use Apple Xcode and the Swift programming language to implement your app.
The app economy is anticipated to soon reach the $6-trillion mark. As the prevalence of apps grows, Inspire Idaho provides the chance to learn how to participate in this economy. Participants experience guidance and mentorship from U of I faculty and staff, and industry experts as they gather skills to rapidly and affordably prepare for emerging job opportunities. Upon completion of the program, participants will also receive a verified badge of competency from the U of I Coeur d’Alene marking their achievement and ability to create apps with Swift.
Inspire Idaho teams meet on a weekly or biweekly basis at a designated location within your community. Gathering locations include: University of Idaho Extension offices, libraries and local community centers that provide an inviting environment for teamwork and collaboration. During team meetings, local experts and mentors are available to answer questions, review completed assignments, brainstorm ideas and provide lesson guidance.
Each team includes a local volunteer mentor who engages team members and provides support for learner participation and success. A volunteer expert is also available to every team. Experts have coding experience and receive some training with the Swift programming language. The experts help participants overcome barriers, troubleshoot problems in progressing through the curriculum and help to develop app ideas.
Video conferencing options are available for learners who cannot physically attend a team meeting. Further instructions and schedules will be provided to learners anticipating this need. Adequate bandwidth is required to participate via video conferencing.
Community leaders around the state have utilized local funding opportunities (e.g. grants and economic development funds) to supply their own small MacBook Lending Library for local learners. This is a great way to get a few devices into your town and help us launch another team. We are excited to work with anyone interested in leading a group in their own town. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss how we can help bring this program to your community!
