Ukraine Crisis is Topic of Feb. 24 Panel Discussion at U of I

February 23, 2022

MOSCOW, Idaho — Feb. 23, 2022 — A free presentation on the Ukrainian crisis and its causes, historical context and significance is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in Room 141 of the Education Building on the University of Idaho campus and online.

“The Ukrainian Crisis: Context, Causes and Consequences,” will include four U of I faculty members including Erin Damman, clinical assistant professor for the International Studies Program; Lisa Carlson, Borah professor of political science; Charles Dainoff, clinical assistant professor of political science; and Florian Justwan, associate professor of political science.

Each professor will give a brief presentation before answering questions from the audience.

The crisis began last year when Russia started moving troops and military equipment to its border with Ukraine. By December, more than 100,000 troops were near the border, according to media reports, and intelligence suggests Russia may plan an invasion this year.

The implications of the crisis are huge and potentially widespread, Justwan said.

“It would affect global energy prices; it could cause significant refugee streams in Europe and aggravate existing supply chain issues,” Justwan said. “It’s a case where a large country is ignoring fundamental principles of international law.”

The result could be used as a roadmap for other worldwide conflict areas, he said.

“This could serve as a template for cases such as Taiwan, and other conflicts in the world,” he said.

The panel discussion is available online at uidaho.zoom.us/j/9457372902.

The Education Building is located at 921 Campus Drive.
