U of I Summer of Science Kids Programs Start Saturday at Moscow Farmers Market

May 30, 2019

MOSCOW, Idaho — May 30, 2019 — The Summer of Science, a 14-week series of fun activities geared to elementary-age children, begins its third season Saturday, June 1, at the Moscow Farmers Market.

Sponsored by the University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the programs highlight the many subjects addressed by scientists on the campus only blocks away.

This year’s season starts with science favored by fans of all ages: a taste test. U of I Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences dietetics director and nutrition expert Hydee Becker and students will ask young researchers to sample and rate mini muffins.

Other programs planned in June will focus on wheat and wheat flour on June 8, fabric dyeing on June 15, healthy soil on June 22 and Idaho butterflies on June 29. The Idaho Farm Bureau is furnishing equipment for the wheat program and others this summer about water quality and dairying.

More information is available online at uidaho.edu/cals/news-and-events/farmers-market.

The location of the college’s tent changed this year. It is now located along Fifth Street adjacent to the Storm Cellar and the Moscow Food Co-Op’s parking lot. The free Summer of Science activities will operate from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday from June through August.

An end-of-season drawing will be open to children ages 5 to 11 who attend at least five weekly programs. Prizes include a science kit sponsored by the college and iPads donated by the Idaho Central Credit Union.

In addition to the children’s activities, the college offers programs throughout the market season from May through October. UI Extension, Latah County, Idaho Master Gardeners also plan to participate in the market on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
