Strategies Food Marketers Use to Tempt Us Focus of U of I Boise Talk

May 29, 2019

BOISE, Idaho — May 29, 2019 — How immune consumers are to the power of persuasion when it comes to shopping, preparing and eating food will be the subject of the next University of Idaho Vandal Voices speaker series event Thursday, June 6, in Boise.

Ariel Agenbroad, a U of I area Extension educator for Ada County, will discuss “How Smart Marketers Influence the Way we Eat” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Amsterdam Lounge , 609 W. Main St., Boise.

Food trends, modern lifestyles, disposable income and other factors affect our choices, but how much are consumers being influenced by the environments in which they shop for food? From the farmers market booth to the superstore, sophisticated visual, marketing and psychological principles are purposefully being applied in subtle and not so subtle ways to nudge Americans toward decisions.

In this interactive session, Agenbroad will test participants’ “shopper IQ,” check how immune savvy consumers are to the power of persuasion and reveal some secrets behind the strategies food marketers use to tempt and persuade consumers.

Agenbroad specializes in urban agriculture, youth horticulture and issues surrounding local food production, processing, marketing and consumption in southwest Idaho. She focuses on community food systems in the greater Boise metropolitan area, particularly around issues related to hunger relief, farmers markets, small-scale food processing, farm-to-school programs and community gardening.

Vandal Voices is free and open to those 21 and older. Space is limited and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants can RSVP here.

The bi-monthly speaker series is sponsored by University of Idaho Boise. It is designed to inform and engage Idahoans in the Treasure Valley about research and educational topics.

A subsequent Vandal Voices is planned for August. The topic, time and location for that talk will be announced at a later date.
