Teenage Inventor Alex Knoll and Renowned Aviation Designer Burt Rutan Deliver EXPO Talks Friday

April 26, 2018

The College of Engineering welcomes two speakers separated in age by two generations but who exemplify a spirit of innovation, to the 25thannual Engineering Design EXPO .

Alex Knoll will present the first ever EXPO Future Engineer talk at 1 p.m. Friday, April 27, in the Borah Theater of the Bruce M. Pitman Center. Knoll is a 13-year-old app developer from Post Falls who has gained national attention for his Ability App. He will speak to EXPO visitors about his journey developing the app and talk about the things we can do, big and small, to make the world a more inclusive and accessible place.

Burt Rutan will deliver the EXPO Keynote address at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Vandal Ballroom of the Bruce M. Pitman Center. Rutan is an internationally renowned aerospace designer once described by Newsweek as “the man responsible for more innovations in modern aviation than any living engineer.” He designed Voyager, the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refueling, and SpaceShipOne, the world’s first privately built manned craft to reach space. Rutan will speak on the topic of managing and motivating the creative process. A question and answer session will follow.

“Both of this year’s speakers have different problem-solving lenses and both are innovative leaders that our students can learn from,” said Larry Stauffer, dean of the College of Engineering. “Alex Knoll is designing innovative socially conscious technology. Burt Rutan is an explorer who has spent his career literally redefining innovation. We are very fortunate to have both Alex and Burt join us at EXPO.”

Engineering Design EXPO is Idaho’s longest-running interdisciplinary engineering initiative featuring student innovations. Student design projects will be on display from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Bruce M. Pitman Center.
