CLASS Awards Four Olsson Early Career Fellowships for FY21

Four faculty members from the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences have been awarded Olsson Early Career Fellowships. This program aims to help recently hired faculty develop scholarly/creative programs that promote research and creative activities in the humanities, arts and social sciences that will attract outside funding and/or that will result in publications, patents or exhibitions/performances.
The FY21 recipients and projects funded are:
- Omi Hodwitz, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Project: “Terrorist Recidivism Study (TRS) Expansion”
- Florian Justwan, assistant professor in the Department of Politics and Philosophy. Project: “Defense Treaties, International Law, and Moral Foundations Theory”
- Bal Krishna Sharma, assistant professor in the Department of English. Project: “Intercultural Communication in Tourism: Critical Perspectives”
- Dawn Sweet, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Communication Studies. Project: “Decision Making and Bias: A Behavior-Based Approach to Detecting a Concealed Weapon”
The fellowships are named for former CLASS dean and English faculty member Kurt Olsson, who served the university from 1974 until his retirement in 2009. He is remembered for his support of interdisciplinary research through the creation of the Humanities Fellows program and the Malcolm M. Renfrew Interdisciplinary Colloquium. Reviewers for this year’s awards were Dale Graden, Rachel Halverson and Diane Kelly-Riley.
