Save Energy and Money – Be Aware of Plug Loads

November 14, 2019

As we all look for ways to cut costs, it is a great opportunity to combine cost savings with energy conservation — a double win for the university. Plug loads may account for as much as 50% of the university energy use. If we reduce plug loads in our offices, potential energy savings could be nearly $1 million each year. U of I Utilities and Energy Services is asking for your help to accomplish this cost savings.

What can you do?

  • Specify energy efficient Energy Star equipment and pay special attention to parasitic loads in order to use equipment in the most efficient manner.
  • Replace desktops with laptops when appropriate. Laptops are 76% more energy efficient than desktop computers.
  • Replace CRT monitors with LCD monitors.
  • Turn off printers or set to power saving mode, especially overnight.

Utilities and Energy Services is encouraging everyone to participate and help reduce energy demand. If we each do our part, we can help the university meet its budgetary challenges while also helping save energy. Learn more about plug loads.
