Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Announces 2017 Festival Theme for 50th Anniversary

October 06, 2016

The University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will celebrate 50 years of bringing world-renowned artists and jazz professionals to Moscow on Feb. 23-25, 2017. This year’s festival theme — “Grounded in Tradition. Breaking New Ground.” —comes with great excitement as the festival returns to the Lionel Hampton School of Music within UI’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. The organizational change allows the festival to refocus on its long history of music education.

“We are extremely excited that the jazz festival is coming back to its roots in the Lionel Hampton School of Music,” said Vern Sielert, artistic advisor for the festival and director of jazz studies at UI. “Having all the student performances return to campus is a perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this important educational festival.”

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is a three-day educational event featuring student performances, engaging hands-on clinics and professional workshops for students ranging from elementary school to college, as well as community members. Attendees have access to the knowledge and skills of world-class performers and the opportunity to attend nightly concerts by celebrated artists.

This year, all Jazz Fest workshops and performances will be held on UI’s Moscow campus. The workshops begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23. Evening concerts will be held at the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center on Feb. 23-25. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

Continuing Lionel Hampton’s tradition of reaching out to the local community, visiting artists will participate in the Jazz in the Schools program, Feb. 21-22. This annual outreach program allows an estimated 7,000 elementary and middle school students from northern and central Idaho and Eastern Washington to meet jazz artists and experience the many diverse forms of jazz music.

Tickets for the 2017 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival will be available Dec. 5 through the University of Idaho Ticket Office at 208-885-7212 or www.uidaho.edu/ticketoffice.
