New VandalStar Alert Flags Go Live

Starting this week, two new alert flags — “Registration ALERT-Student Accounts Hold” and “Registration ALERT-Advisor Hold” — will go live and be added to students’ VandalStar accounts. If a student has a current university bill over $500 and/or needs to meet with their academic or faculty advisor, the student will receive an email notification with suggested action steps to address their hold(s). An orange alert flag will also be added to their VandalStar account. Read more

Early Warning Grade Progress Survey Update

In mid-February, course instructors reviewed students’ academic performance by submitting Early Warning Grade Progress Surveys in VandalStar. Course instructor response rate for Spring 2021 was 62% and represented a 9% increase over the Spring 2020 response rate of 53%. Total sections reporting increased from 1,019 in Spring 2020 to 1,155 in Spring 2021. More than 15,000 VandalStar alert flags and kudos were added to students’ VandalStar accounts in a 10-day period. $500,000 USDA Grant Is Awarded to Lorie Higgins

Lorie Higgins is the recipient of a $500,000 three-year grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture/USDA. Lorie’s project is “Building and Sustaining Community Connections During and After Disasters: Rapid Response and Recovery Community Assessment Programs.” The project seeks to assist rural communities in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana with recovery from impacts of the pandemic in the area of community economic development. Campus Can Crushers Recycle More Than 81,500 Cans Across U of I Campus

This story by Lynsey Amundson was published by KIVI-TV in Boise on April 15. MOSCOW — With a grant from the University of Idaho biology engineer student, Addie White, created "Campus Can Crushers" to help Idaho become more recycle friendly. “They are highly durable metal can crushers in the shape of university logos," White said. "It’s a project I started at the University of Idaho because our recycling program was cut.” Read more

James Edward Calvert Jr

James Edward Calvert Jr. passed away Jan. 21. James joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Idaho in 1967. He was a dedicated teacher and mentor and was known for his work to prepare future elementary teachers and computer scientists. While serving as chair of the Math Department for 11 years, he created the innovative Pólya Math Learning Center to support students. Read more

Janice ‘Jan’ Elizabeth Pitkin

Janice “Jan” Elizabeth Pitkin passed away Jan. 21 at her home in Moscow. Jan worked at the University of Idaho in the News Bureau before transferring to the Department of Plant, Soils and Entomological Sciences where she worked for almost 16 years. She later transferred to the College of Natural Resources in the Department of Forest Products for another 10 years. Read more
