Policy and Research

The Rural Studies Program advances the frontiers of scientific knowledge in rural development, centering on matters that support the process of wealth creation in rural communities. By focusing on the totality of capital within rural communities, rural residents can envision a more inclusive, diverse and promising future built upon their existing assets.

The program also provides a platform for faculty and stakeholders to share practice-based knowledge and for stakeholders to influence the questions researchers address. Our scholars take an interdisciplinary approach to solving complex rural challenges and addressing societal problems. Their work generates new knowledge for the benefit of present and future rural generations.

In addition, the Rural Studies Program supports student education by encouraging out-of-the-classroom research, scholarly and creative experiences that expand their minds and give them the skills they need to be successful in their future careers.
