The University of Idaho American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) is an intensive English language program designed to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in academic programs in the United States or to further their professional careers. Since its beginning in 1992, the ALCP has helped hundreds of students improve their English language abilities.

The ALCP offers 18+ hours per week of instruction. We offer semester-long courses in the fall, spring and summer. ALCP advanced students are now able to earn up to nine U of I undergraduate general education credits while taking coursework to meet the U of I language requirement.

The ALCP also provides short-term programs for groups of students or professionals.

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the ALCP is temporarily offering online course delivery for students who are unable to travel to the U.S. but don’t want to delay their English studies.

This includes online placement testing, beginning courses online for late arrivals, and full semester delivery for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.

  • Placement testing will be conducted via Zoom.
  • Online courses will be a combination of recorded classroom sessions, interactions and assignments via the U of I classroom management system, Bblearn, and some Zoom sessions with instructors. We can work with students in all time zones.
  • Passing online courses count the same as in-class courses for progressing through the ALCP and completing the language requirement for U of I admissions for students who complete the ALCP Advanced level.
  • Technology to use Zoom and type in English is required as is a basic proficiency in English to understand the course instruction. Prospective students with no to very limited English are encouraged to study in-person for the best outcomes. ALCP faculty will determine if a student is a better candidate for in-person instruction at a later date.
