Progress through three levels of photography knowledge. Cameras may be film or digital.

Focus on Photography

In the Level 1 photography project, learn

  • equipment basics
  • taking sharper pictures
  • concepts of lighting and flash
  • photo composition
  • sequencing
  • evaluating photos

Controlling the Image

In the Level 2 photography project, use a camera with a flash and adjustable settings to

  • explore depth of field, aperture and shutter speeds, hard and soft lighting, silhouettes and flash techniques
  • evaluate composition using the Rule of Thirds, the Golden Triangle and Rectangle
  • use different viewpoints and understand positive and negative space
  • learn about adjusting shutter speeds, panning techniques, taking close-ups and panoramas

Mastering Photography

In the Level 2 photography project, practice using lenses and filters creatively.

  • Add light effects with meter exposure, light sources and flash
  • Practice compositions using framing, harmony, discord and other design elements
  • Build skills in using color, capturing details and telling a story
