Are you ready to be a Principal, Superintendent or other Educational Leader?

Through the Educational Leadership Program you can earn Masters (M.Ed.) and Specialist (Ed.S.) degrees in educational leadership and prepare for principal or superintendent certification in a variety of online or face-to-face formats that suit your busy schedule. You will study with cutting-edge scholars and experienced practitioners who share your passion for improving learning, inspiring educators and building systems that make a difference in students’ lives. These degrees position you to have an influence on policy-making and administration in educational institutions at local, state and national levels. Our degrees and certifications are for teachers and administrators who want to be leaders in their field. With the degrees, professionals will learn the skills to make important changes in education at local, regional, state and national levels.

Are you ready to earn a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership?

A Doctor of Education (Ed.D) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree with an Educational Leadership emphasis is for students who want to learn advanced skills and theories that will help inform and improve research and practice. This degree prepares students to assume positions as research-based faculty members in universities, high-level administrators and analysts in schools, school districts, and in state and national agencies. The doctorate can also open doors in the private sector as a consultant and CEO. 

All degrees are offered in a variety of face-to-face and online delivery models to meet students’ needs.

Program Features

  • Individuals seeking to become a principal, superintendent or other district administrator may consider a graduate degree or certification in educational leadership from the University of Idaho.
  • Prospective students should have an academic background comparable to a bachelor's degree in education.
  • Classes available in online, face-to-face and a mix of both formats.
  • Program curriculum is aligned to state competencies for school principals and superintendents.
  • The University of Idaho’s Educational Leadership Program accepts applications at any time.
  • The Educational Leadership Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the state of Idaho.
  • The Educational Leadership Program in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences has many distinguished alumni and a 30-year tradition of serving the state of Idaho.
  • Classes provide students with cutting-edge leadership knowledge, skills and dispositions.

Application Process

  • Possess an academic background comparable to the University of Idaho College of Education degree at the bachelor’s level or comparable degree in another field.

  • Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or higher. Consideration given for professional practice.

  • Have maintained at least a 3.50 GPA in graduate academic work, if any.

  • Submit an application for admission to the University of Idaho’s College of Education and the College of Graduate Studies.

  • Master’s degree must be completed within eight years from the time of admission. 

  • Possess an academic background comparable to a University of Idaho College of Education degree at the bachelor’s level or comparable degree in another field.

  • Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or higher. Consideration given for professional practice.

  • Possess an academic background and practitioner experience suitable to leadership in K-12, higher education or related leadership discipline that prepares you to successfully complete coursework and enter the professional leadership field.

  • Preferred: A master’s degree or a specialist degree.

  • Have maintained at least a 3.50 GPA in graduate academic work, if any.

  • Submit an application for admission to the University of Idaho’s College of Education and College of Graduate Studies
