Music (M.Mus.)

The Master of Music degree serves performers, composers and studio or school music teachers as a professional program or a foundation for doctoral study. Areas of concentration are available in:

  • Choral conducting
  • Collaborative piano
  • Composition
  • Orchestral instrument performance
  • Piano pedagogy and performance studies
  • Piano performance
  • Voice performance

Prerequisite: A baccalaureate degree in music (or equivalent) from an accredited institution is required. Students who lack this prerequisite may correct deficiencies by passing appropriate courses that will not be applicable toward the advanced degree.

Music (M.A.)

The Master of Arts degree is designed to prepare the student to pursue a doctorate. The School of Music offers a concentration in music history.

Prerequisite: A baccalaureate degree in music (or equivalent) from an accredited institution is required. Students who lack this prerequisite may correct deficiencies by passing appropriate courses that will not be applicable toward the advanced degree.

Online Master of Music (M.M.)

The online Master of Music (MM) in either performance or composition is designed for prospective students that have at least three years post-undergraduate experience in their field.

Several online/asynchronous courses (including required courses in MUSX511 Bibliography and Research and MUSC521 Musical Analysis) will begin with the Fall 2023 Semester. The majority of the coursework is online/synchronous with the on-campus course schedule. Full course catalogue available here.

Tuition rates for the online MM program at the Lionel Hampton School of Music are set at the in-state graduate tuition rate for the University of Idaho for 9-20 credit hours/semester. Please refer here for tuition information.

Applications for the Spring 2024 semester will open at the beginning of the Fall 2023 semester.
