Steve JohnsonDear Vandals,

Campus is buzzing, and final preparations are being made to welcome students of 2014/15. Big changes are also taking place on campus.

The College of Education building renovation began July 29. President Chuck Staben, Dean Corinne Mantle-Bromley, students and graduates broke ground on updates to redefine work space and add critical technology to the late 1960s building.

Save the date Aug. 22 for the groundbreaking of the Integrated Research and Innovation Center (IRIC), a new facility for discovery-based and interdisciplinary research, to be built between Brink Hall (old Willis Sweet Hall) and the College of Natural Resources.

Before construction begins, sociology/anthropology and history students are working with the community on an archeological dig to uncover pieces of Idaho history left at the site. The dig wraps up Aug. 15. Read more about the project and how you can participate.

Check out photos from these projects, and learn about the progress of others in today's Vandal Vibe.

Vandal's Got Talent

For many, a round of jump rope or double Dutch may seem like a thing of the past. Back when it was easy to remember the cheesy rhymes to sing. Back when it was easier to, well, jump.

For Samantha Lange '12, the aerobic activity is a daily occurrence — and she makes it look easy.

The University of Idaho graduate was part of the international acrobatic jump rope group, Flight Crew Jump Rope, featured on America’s Got Talent 2014. The group wowed judges enough to make it to the quarterfinals.

Idaho Football Fall Camp this Week

It was evident throughout the ranks that one year made a tremendous difference for the Idaho Vandals, who started their second fall camp under head coach Paul Petrino. And it was most clear to Petrino, who had high praise for his team after Monday’s opening session.

“It was a lot better,” Petrino said. “There were a lot of positives.”

Fall camp continues this week with daily 6 p.m. practices through Friday, with the first scrimmage Saturday at 10 a.m.

LinkedIn and Leading: John Nelson '91

It’s not uncommon for Vandals to run into people from different backgrounds along their career path. For John Nelson ’91, his job has taken him across multiple languages, religions and cultures — from Montana to Texas and Japan to Afghanistan.

Before working in the global melting pot of his career as a U.S. Air Force Joint Task Force Civil Support chief, Nelson said he experienced his first cultural mixer at the University of Idaho.

Nelson is an avid LinkedIn user, and is connected with alumni channels to stay up-to-date on career advice, alumni successes and more.
