The new school year will bring a refreshing wave of energy to the University of Idaho campus — from students and faculty and staff.

With former interim president Don Burnett returning as a professor of law, Mark Adams will be taking the helm as dean of the UI College of Law. Adams comes to us from Valparaiso University School of Law, in Valparaiso, Indiana. He received a B.A. in art history from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1983 and a J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1988.

The university's largest college, the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, also has a new leader in Andrew Kersten. Kersten earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati. He comes to UI from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The search also has begun to fill the enormous shoes of retiring Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Bruce Pitman. Nominations are being accepted, interviews will begin in September, and Pitman has agreed to steer the ship — as he has done for 41 years — until his successor is hired.

With President Chuck Staben also on the Vandal team, we have a lot of new leadership and insight to look forward to in the coming year.

GO VANDALS!

The Science of Fire

In 2012, 80 percent of the 9.3 million acres burned by wildfire in the United States were in the 11 western states. Idaho, Oregon and Montana saw the most activity with 44 percent of the total burned acres.

This year, a wildfire emergency has been declared with flames consuming nearly 400 square miles in north-central Washington state. Whiskey Complex fires near Boise, Idaho, have burned 8,500 acres since Saturday.

The University of Idaho is the leading university in wildfire research, education and collaboration. With the first certified wildfire ecology program in the nation and the only university lab dedicated to the study of combustion and smoke emissions, UI is internationally renowned for its fire science.
