Today marks the 47th year of a unique and truly special event at the University of Idaho.
Once a year, artists from around the world flock to the Moscow campus for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival to bring students the gift of jazz. Since its inception, students have experienced the improvised bebop of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, the pure tones of vocalist Ella Fitzgerald and the rhythms of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, among others.
Former festival director of 30 years Lynn "Doc" Skinner worked closely with Hampton to bring in these big names. As each performer experienced campus for the first time, Skinner said they all had the same realization - there's nothing quite like it.
"They'd say, 'Something is happening here. When we get to campus to play, we step it up a notch. You won’t ever hear the same thing as you will on this campus," Skinner recalled.
Well, we couldn't agree more. Take a deeper look at Doc's longtime relationship with jazz great Lionel Hampton in today's Vandal Vibe. And check out the complete list of festival events going on Feb. 19-22

Former festival director Lynn "Doc" Skinner recalls longtime relationship with jazz great
No matter the holiday, Lynn “Doc” Skinner could guarantee his phone would ring. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July and on the birth of each grandchild – it would ring.
And on the other end of the line would be a great talent and even greater friend, Lionel Hampton.
“When our kids were born, he called them his grandkids,” Skinner said. “When our granddaughter was born 18 years ago, he sent her two dozen roses. She didn’t even know what a rose was at six weeks.”
In addition to friendly check-ins, these calls would increase in frequency as February neared closer and the duo began gearing up for the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
The festival was a passionate subject that strengthened the relationship between both music enthusiasts. Hampton, the renowned vibraphonist for which the festival is named, and Skinner, former UI director of music education and festival director for 30 years.
“We’d meet and talk,” he said. “I literally would spend 30-40 hours talking with him about the schedule.”
Skinner will give insight to his long friendship with the “King of Vibes” at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Idaho Commons Clearwater Room.
