The End Is Near. Students huddle in groups to complete group projects, and the time-tested flash cards are being made as a last-ditch effort to cram a few more facts before those tests are taken. Near the end of this week a much larger number of students than usual will also give into fatigue, and their bodies will sprawl in soft chairs outside my office for short naps.

The 2012 Vandal Football schedule was just released with associated dates for Dads' Weekend and Homecoming. It will be an exciting and challenging season as we play last season’s number one nationally ranked Louisiana State Tigers and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels….yikes! We will also have some exciting home game opponents including the University of Wyoming and San Jose State University. It should be great fun.

This past weekend, the 45th annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival filled the UI campus and Moscow with jazz fans. Bus loads of high school students performed, attended workshops, and enjoyed outstanding concerts. This annual event transforms Moscow for a few fun days into a center of talent, energy, and great performances. UI students are also generally shocked to see this invasion of activity into their normal study spaces and coffee shops but take the giggling high school crowds in stride.

This week, heads have been leaning over laptops, notebooks and review notes. It was often hard to know whether they were studying, sleeping or praying...perhaps a combination of strategies were being used. Grades will soon be posted and the holiday buses will leave town on Saturday morning. It is time to be with family and have a few holiday adventures.

I hope that you had a restful and joyful Thanksgiving with your Vandal. Students have returned to a beautifully decorated campus and the most academically challenging weeks of fall semester. The Idaho Commons and living groups have holiday lights that create a festive backdrop to the work of final projects, presentations, and then final exams.
