During the first weeks of the semester, new students are learning the ABC’s of campus, and those challenges are literally about learning the jumble of letters … TLC, CNR, SUB, LLC, the JEB, and many others. You almost need a “decoder ring” to translate the abbreviations for building names and short hand references for programs.

The End Is Near. Students huddle in groups to complete group projects, and the time-tested flash cards are being made as a last-ditch effort to cram a few more facts before those tests are taken. Near the end of this week a much larger number of students than usual will also give into fatigue, and their bodies will sprawl in soft chairs outside my office for short naps.

It was a perfect weekend. Our Commencement ceremony was extraordinary. Approximately 1,500 students received degrees and one of those Vandals was the 100,000th graduate of the University of Idaho. Kristin Armstrong was our Commencement speaker who gave a remarkable inspiring story. Kristen was a 1995 alumna who won a Gold Medal in cycling at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Most families were joyful ……while a few were amazed. A few parking tickets may also need to be paid before the diploma actually comes in the mail.
