In Memory: Ken Noren

Ken NorenKenneth V. Noren was born in Portland, Michigan January 10, 1958. Ken was the first in his family to receive a college education. He earned his baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees from Michigan State University in 1987, 1989, and 1992, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Idaho in 1992 as an assistant professor. Ken was promoted to the level of associate professor in July 1999.

Ken was an exceptionally dedicated educator with a passion for teaching undergraduate students his favorite subject, analog electronics. He was a demanding teacher who expected great things from his students. He patiently helped students grasp complicated concepts and encouraged them to achieve excellence.

The following student quotes typify his contributions as an educator:

  • “He could make the most complicated concepts seem easy to understand.”
  • “He is the reason I stayed in school.”
  • “He was the kind of teacher that always had his door open and answered his emails.”
  • “He never made me feel stupid.”

His knowledge will live on through hundreds of well-prepared students who work in the demanding, high-paced electronics industry.

Ken loved the outdoors. He, Debbie (his wife) and their golden retrievers hiked, backpacked, and camped across much of Idaho. Ken enjoyed winter camping at Freeze Out Mountain east of Clarkia. Biking to East Lookout on Moscow Mountain was one of his favorite activities.

Ken passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012 after fighting a short but courageous battle against cancer. He epitomized the spirit of the University of Idaho with his passion, knowledge, dedication, dependability and commitment. Ken was a kind and compassionate individual with a deep jovial laugh. He is deeply missed by his colleagues, students, friends and family.
