These organizations encourage leadership, collegiality with your fellow classmates in an informal setting, mentoring by upperclassmen and graduate students and networking with area and regional professionals. This integral part of your college experience provides great opportunities to get involved and gain experiences outside of the classroom. Many of our student organizations travel to their regional or national meetings and compete in design competitions or technical presentations. Don’t wait to join! Student Chapters of Professional Engineering Organizations

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

AIAA is a multi-disciplinary group of students interested in expanding their knowledge in the fields of aerospace science and technology. Students in this club have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of design competitions, research projects and other engineering activities throughout the academic year. Their projects include rebuilding and testing a turbocharger and designing an AUV for a future competition. American Society of Civil Engineers

ASCE participates yearly in several exciting competitions including National Steel Bridge Competition, National Concrete Canoe Competition, surveying, technical paper competitions, and much more. For more information contact president Kade Dustin.

Association for Computing Machinery

ACM is the oldest organization supporting the activities of computing professionals. It has active student participation and regular meetings open to all who are interested. American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Biomedical Engineering Society

BME club is for undergraduate and graduate students, enrolled in an engineering program or related science, interested in exploring the field of biomedical engineering. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International)

UI Engineering supports two SAE International teams:

  • Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC) Team — CSC is a SAE International Collegiate Design Series interdisciplinary competition held annual in Houghton, Michigan. The UI Clean Snowmobile Challenge Team reengineers an existing snowmobile to improve emissions, noise, and fuel economy. The UI team has competed in the CSC for sixteen years. The UI team won the competition in 2002, 2003 and 2007 and has accumulated more than 50 awards. UI is the only team in CSC history to win the coveted Founder’s Trophy award back-to-back in 2015 and 2016. For more information contact team captain Mark Woodland.
  • Formula Hybrid Race Car Team — Formula Hybrid is a SAE International Collegiate Design Series interdisciplinary competition. Students collaboratively design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid racecar and compete in a series of events annually in New Hampshire. College Ambassadors

College Ambassadors work under the direction of the Engineering recruiting team. Ambassadors conduct visits to make presentations about the College of Engineering to local and regional schools as well as their alma maters. Engineering Toastmasters

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. For more information contact Maria Pregitzer.

Each semester the College of Engineering invites seniors who are graduating with their engineering degree (BAE, CE, CME, MSE, ME) to join the Order of the Engineer and participate in an Induction Ceremony. The purpose of the Order of the Engineer is to foster a sense of pride, fellowship, and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order fosters a unity of purpose and honoring of one’s pledge lifelong.

The induction ceremony consists of reciting the “Obligation of an Engineer” (the code of ethics), accepting a certificate and the placing of a stainless steel ring on the little finger of the working hand. The certificate and ring are public symbols of your dedication to serve humanity through the engineering profession. The ceremonies are conducted by Links (local sections) of the Order.

BACKGROUND

The Obligation of the Order of the Engineer is similar to the Canadian “Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer” initiated there in 1926. After the collapse of the Quebec Bridge during its construction in 1907 there was a growing movement in Canada to license professional engineers and emphasize the ethical obligations of the engineering profession. Rudyard Kipling was asked to help develop an obligation and a ceremony for this purpose. In the text of the Canadian Calling, Kipling emphasized the social responsibility of the engineer by asking him or her to affirm their intent “upon my Honour and Cold Iron”. According to legend, the first rings were fashioned from the collapsed metal of the Quebec Bridge and the Canadian organization uses a wrought iron ring. The extension of the Ritual outside Canada was prevented by copyright and other conflicting factors.

The first Order of the Engineer induction ceremony in the United States was held on June 4, 1970 at Cleveland State University. About 170 engineering seniors and faculty members participated in the ceremony. A second ceremony was held in Akron, Ohio in February 1971, which included seniors at the University of Akron and practicing engineers. Since then, The Order of the Engineer has grown to include tens of thousands of members inducted at Links (local chapters) established in nearly every state in the union. Although patterned after the Canadian concept, The Order of the Engineer has differences that are distinctively associated with the United States of America.

THE OBLIGATION

The Obligation is a creed similar to the oath attributed to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) that is generally taken by medical graduates and which sets forth an ethical code. It contains parts of the Canon of Ethics of major engineering societies. Initiates, as they accept it voluntarily, pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.

Every fall semester we host a series of informational seminars where new and continuing engineering students can learn more about the College of Engineering. The seminars are a great opportunity to learn about the differences between the engineering majors and also to learn about exciting extracurricular and career opportunities for engineering students. The National Academy of Engineering has recognized the University of Idaho, College of Engineering’s Senior Capstone design program as one of the best in the nation.

The capstone program is among 29 engineering education programs chosen as exemplars in engineering education, and one of only seven capstone programs highlighted by the National Academy as, “Infusing Real-World Experiences into Engineering Education.”

As a graduation requirement all undergraduate UI engineering students participate in the senior capstone design program. Students apply their education to solving a complex problem, typically supported by an industry or academic sponsor.

As part of the Senior Design Program the college holds its annual signature event Engineering Design EXPO. Engineering Design EXPO showcases our senior engineering capstone projects and is the Northwest’s longest-running, interdisciplinary initiative featuring student innovations.
