  • Biography

    Kurt S. Pregitzer was appointed dean of the College of Natural Resources and Thomas L. Reveley Professor of Forest Ecology on Aug. 8, 2010. Prior to coming to the University of Idaho, Pregitzer was professor and chair of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada. Pregitzer also served as director of Michigan Technological University's Ecosystem Science Center. From 1994-2007, he was a professor in the School of Forestry and Wood Products at Michigan Technological University. From 1983-91, he moved from assistant to full professor positions in the Department of Forestry at Michigan State University, and from 1981-83, he was an assistant professor in University of Idaho's Department of Forest Resources. In 2002, Pregitzer received the Barrington Moore Memorial Award from the Society of American Foresters for Outstanding Accomplishments in the Advancement of Forest Biology. Pregitzer also has served as a competitive research program manager for both the Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is an ISI Highly Cited Scientist.

    Leadership and Outreach Activities
    • Led a team of faculty that designed and implemented a degree-granting program of study in Applied Ecology and Environmental Science modeled after ESA’s certification requirements (http://forest.mtu.edu/academics/ae.htm). This required approval of the Michigan State Board of Higher Education.
    • Chairperson of Michigan’s Society of American Foresters, a group of more than 650 professionals in Michigan. Implemented several programs that promoted the ecological stewardship of forest resources.
    • Led a team of faculty from several departments in a successful NSF Major Research Instrumentation proposal that brought stable isotope mass spectrometers to the MTU campus.
    • Founded a new USFS Research Work Unit on the Michigan Tech campus in collaboration with the USDA North Central Research Station.
    • Founded the Ecosystem Science Center, whose mission is to promote understanding of ecosystem function through education and research at Michigan Technological University. The center is comprised of seventeen faculty and staff. The ESC mission is strongly focused on graduate student research and education.
    • Established the summer Global Change Teachers Institute (in collaboration with the Department of Education.) The Institute was founded to extend global climate change research into middle and high school classrooms. Demand for the Institute (2005-2010) has been high, with more than 200 teachers attending from throughout the Midwest, Northeast, California, and Mexico. The Institute was featured by NSF in their highlights to Congress.
    • Developed a demographic approach to the study of plant root systems that is now routinely used world-wide.
  • Outreach Projects
    • Served as an associate editor for the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Tree Physiology, the Journal of Ecology (British Ecological Society), and Ecology and Ecological Monographs, the official outlet for the Ecological Society of America.

    • Served as director of the Midwestern NICCR Center (13 Midwestern States) for two years and supervised a competitive extramural grants program of $2 million each year, including all aspects of pre- and post-award grant administration.

    • Panel member for the National Science Foundation (10 separate panels), USDA Competitive Grants (3 separate panels) and the Minnesota Legislative Commission on Natural Resources. Was program manager for the USDA NRI Soils and Soil Biology Panel for two years.

    • Secured more than $20 million in extramural support to Michigan Tech.

    • Secured more than $2 million in extramural research to the University of Nevada (2008-2009).

    • 2004 Thomson-ISI (“Current Contents”) identified the world's most cited authors, placed Pregitzer on their list of Highly Cited Researchers.

    • 2002 Barrington Moore Memorial Award from the Society of American Foresters for Outstanding Accomplishments in the Advancement of Forest Biology.

    • 2000 Michigan Association of Governing Boards Distinguished Faculty Award

    • 1999 Michigan Technological University All-University Research Award
