UI Researchers Use Proof and Argument to Help Teachers, Students in Mathematics

University of Idaho mathematics and education researchers will work with teachers across the Northwest beginning this fall to explore the success of a method for improving mathematics learning in eighth grade. The four-year project examines teaching and learning math with and through viable argumentation.

Polya Training for Advisors

Please join us for one of two training opportunities next week as Ann Abbott demonstrates how advisors can track their students' progress through Polya courses in near real time. The information accessible is more detailed than Try Scores and should allow advisors more opportunities to support student success. Training sessions are 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Aurora Room or 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday in the Whitewater Room, both in the Commons. Read more

Paul Joseph Joyce: 1958-2016

Paul Joseph Joyce was born September 26, 1958 in Butte, Montana, one of the 12 children of Thomas and Dorothy Joyce. Academically gifted, he breezed through the Butte schools, and then graduated from Montana State University in just four years with both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics. He went on to the University of Utah for his doctorate, where he met and married his wife and best friend, Janalyn Steed. They had a son, Andrew, who brought great joy to the couple and became Paul’s favorite political debater, intellectual sparring partner and late night scotch drinker. Read more
