IRT Presents “The Lion in Winter” on July 12, Meadowinds Castle
Monday, July 7
MOSCOW, Idaho – June 9, 2014 – A compelling script and talented actors deserve a fabulous venue – and that is exactly what Idaho Repertory Theatre delivers with its next special event, a staged reading of “The Lion in Winter” on July 12 at Meadowinds Castle. This one-night-only fundraiser includes complimentary hearty appetizers and dessert, and a no-host wine bar, sponsored by the Wine Company of Moscow.
With its arches, towers and pinnacles, Moscow’s Meadowinds Castle is the perfect backdrop for “Lion.” Nestled on a hill and hidden among the ponderosa pines, Meadowinds Castle has been 25 years in the making. The space is popular as a bed & breakfast and has a chapel for weddings. This will be the Castle’s debut as a performance venue.
Set during Christmas in 1183, “The Lion in Winter” depicts the gamesmanship between King Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine as their three sons maneuver for the crown. The story may be familiar to many; Kathryn Hepburn and Peter O’Toole stared in an academy award-winning movie version of the play in the 1960’s.
IRT’s reading features guest artist Joe Golden as the “Lion,” King Henry. Golden, a veteran actor with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, loves to find the humor in a play. “Shakespeare always wrote clowns into the darkest of his tragedies and so do other wonderful playwrights, Golden said. “The Lion in Winter” has fantastic humor in it. It makes the characters human and vulnerable.”
The staged reading, directed by David Lee-Painter, also features Nancy Lee-Painter, Cory Williamson, Daniel Haley, Nick Eastman Pratt, Shane Brown and Emily Park Williams.
The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with wine and appetizers on the Meadowinds patio; the reading follows at 7:30 with dessert at intermission and a post-show question and answer session. Seating is limited for this special fundraiser; tickets are $65 and must be purchased in advance at BookPeople of Moscow or at the Theatre Arts office in Shoup Hall at the University of Idaho. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. For more information contact IRT at 208-885-6465.
Idaho Repertory Theatre is one of the Northwest’s oldest professional summer theatre companies and a signature program of the UI. From classics to contemporary plays, from staged readings to youth theatre, IRT has offered vibrant and entertaining theatre for over 60 years.
