Activist Bree Newsome to Discuss Social Change at CLASS Series

April 05, 2022

MOSCOW, Idaho — April 4, 2022 — Filmmaker, musician, speaker and activist Bree Newsome will discuss how a triumphant act of civil disobedience can spark a movement and inspire others to embrace activism during an online event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14.

The webinar is free and open to the public at tinyurl.com/SCSSBN. Registration is required.

Newsome is a contemporary civil rights icon who first garnered national attention for a daring act of peaceful disobedience in June 2015. Following the brutal murder of nine black parishioners at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina, she climbed a flagpole at the South Carolina statehouse and pulled down the Confederate battle flag as a protest against racist symbolism. Her arrest galvanized public opinion and led to the permanent removal of the flag.

Through her work as an activist and community organizer, Newsome brings to light the importance of leadership development in building and sustaining social movements. She outlines the relationship between activism and art and describes in cinematic detail the heroic gestures of ordinary people on the front lines of the fight to end injustice and racial discrimination.

This discussion is part of CLASS’s Spring 2022 Social Change Speaker Series, which examines social change and engagement from a variety of perspectives and experiences.
