Class Descriptions
University of Idaho Swim Center is an American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Provider. The program is designed for children over 6 months up to adults. Students progress through the levels at their own pace, mastering the skills in the one level before then advancing to the next. The Swim Center provides a group setting for Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics Levels 1-3, and Learn to Swim Courses levels 1-6. Class Descriptions
(previously Parent/Tot) For children ages 6 months-36 months. One parent is required to be in water with child. The goal of this class is to familiarize children with the water and provide safety information for parents, as well as teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Swim diapers required for those not potty trained.
(previously Guppies) For children ages 3yrs-5yrs. The goal of this class is to familiarize children with the water, and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills, as well as to help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.
(previously Sea Horse) For children ages 3yrs-5yrs. The goal of this class is to build on and improve skills learned in Preschool Aquatics Level 1, as well as increase knowledge of water safety topics. Children at this level should be comfortable being in the water, and getting their faces wet.
(previously Tadpole/Starfish) For children ages 3yrs-5yrs. The goal of this class is to increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool Aquatics levels 1 and 2, as well as to reinforce water safety concepts from the earlier levels. Children at this level should be comfortable floating in the water, blowing bubbles, kicking, and using their arms.
(previously Minnow) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to orient children in the aquatic environment, as well as help them gain basic aquatic skills and begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.
(previously Sea Otters) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Learn to Swim Level 1. Children at this level should be able to enter the water independently, be comfortable getting their faces wet, and be comfortable floating with assistance.
(previously Dolphins) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to build on the skills learned in Learn to Swim Levels 1 and 2, and help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Children at this level should be comfortable getting their faces wet, floating, kicking, and using their arms in the water.
(previously Sting Ray) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to improve participants’ proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Learn to Swim Level 3. Children at this level should be comfortable jumping into the water, floating, and be able to proficiently swim the front stroke for 25 yards.
(previously Piranha) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to introduce and help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (front stroke, back stroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly). Children at this level should be comfortable jumping into water, submerging, swimming 25 yards, and have proficient knowledge of front stroke and backstroke.
(previously Barracuda/Shark) For children ages 6 and up. The goal of this class is to refine strokes so participants swim with greater efficiency and effectiveness over long distances, as well as address aquatic emergencies and self-rescue techniques. Children at this level should be comfortable diving into water, swimming for 50 yards, and have a proficient knowledge of front stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke.
