About

The Western Rural Development Center (WRDC) links the research and educational outreach capacity of the western's 30 land grant institutions with communities, local decision-makers, entrepreneurs, families, and farmers and ranchers to help address a wide range of development issues unique to our region.

At the heart of our mission lies the mandate outlined in Section 503(b)(2) of the Rural Development Act of 1972, commonly known as "Title V." Under this legislation, our center spearheads regional programs aimed at fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange across multiple states. With a focus on high-priority knowledge, training and personnel development, we strive to empower research and extension staff to effectively tackle rural development challenges.

Our center serves as a vital hub for synthesizing existing research knowledge, interpreting it for practical application and developing strategies to address pressing rural development issues of regional significance. Through technical consultation, personnel development initiatives and targeted research efforts, we equip stakeholders with the tools and expertise needed to navigate the complex landscape of rural development.

Collaboration is at the core of everything we do. We work closely with our network of land grant institutions, leveraging their expertise and resources to maximize our impact. Additionally, we ensure alignment with federal development priorities and programs, forging strong partnerships with key stakeholders at both the state and federal levels.

As we strive to enhance rural prosperity and resilience, our center remains committed to driving positive change and fostering sustainable development across our region. Through innovation, collaboration and a steadfast dedication to our mission, we aim to build a brighter future for rural communities and the individuals who call them home.
