NRC Rankings
UI Geography Ranked High in the NRC Rankings
We are very proud that our relatively young PhD program (established in 1992) was ranked at 16 (or higher, depending on which scale is used) among all other doctoral programs in geography in the U.S. We are in very good company among highly prestigious universities from throughout the country, each with long-standing geography programs and long records of excellence in graduate education and research. The top ranked geography departments are: Boston U., U.C. Santa Barbara, U. Maryland, UCLA, U. Colorado, U. Wisconsin, Penn State U., U. Oregon, Clark U., U. South Carolina, Arizona State U., U. Arizona, U. Illinois, U. Kentucky, Ohio State U., and U. Idaho. Our geography department rankings reflect high rates of published research and citations and successful research funding efforts that support graduate students. Also important is our short time to graduation among doctoral students and the diversity of our graduate students, among other measures used in the rankings.
