University of Idaho Launches Largest Capital Campaign in State History

Friday, April 27 2012

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho is making history with its launch this week of a $225 million comprehensive capital campaign, Inspiring Futures: Invest in the University of Idaho.

The effort – the most ambitious ever in Idaho – will guarantee Idaho’s land-grant, research institution is positioned now and in the future to continue to offer internationally competitive education programs from the undergraduate up through the post-doctoral level, while simultaneously driving Idaho’s economic prosperity and addressing the most important issues of the day.

M. Duane Nellis, university president, said such philanthropic investments are critical if the university is to continue to offer superior and accessible higher education opportunities.

“We are positioning the University of Idaho for an unprecedented century ahead,” said Nellis. “Our first 123 years was just the beginning. To reach our next level of success requires substantial private investment for scholarships, faculty, programs and facilities.”

The initial, quiet phase of the campaign began in 2007. Since then, 28,403 donors have made gifts totaling $161.8 million, catapulting the campaign more than halfway to its goal. This early success shows the commitment Idaho alumni, faculty, staff, family and friends have to the University of Idaho and its critical role in educating future leaders, Nellis said.

Jeffry Stoddard, ’75 and ’76, University of Idaho Foundation, Inc. chairman and campaign co-chair, said: “As the state’s flagship research university, the University of Idaho has done a great job historically of educating young people for successful lives, both professionally and personally, and I think they still do that today.”

“However, the university must find new investments to continue to offer globally competitive education in the 21st century,” said Stoddard, who along with his wife Kristine ’75 and Richard and Sharon Allen, both ’73, are campaign co-chairs.

The university is concentrating on four areas of importance, each with its own financial goal:

Catalyzing Student Success - $54 million
For additional undergraduate and graduate scholarships as well as graduate fellowships to attract the best and brightest students from around the world.
Need: To continue the university’s commitment to education accessibility, while maintaining its position as Idaho’s leading provider of student financial aid.

Leading Innovation and Discovery - $63 million
To increase endowed chairs and fellowships with which to draw gifted new faculty while enabling the university to retain its best teachers and scholars.
Need: Creates advantage in a highly competitive higher education environment.

Creating Distinction and Impact through Enterprise Partnerships - $46 million
To grow and strengthen partnerships, collaborations and outreach with government, private industry and research organizations that stimulate economic prosperity and solve critical issues. Need: Cooperative alliances multiply positive impacts, advance knowledge and simultaneously provide students with relevant and up-to-the-minute discoveries and best practices in their fields of study.

Building a World-Class Learning Environment - $62 million
First-class laboratories, classrooms and performance halls create the educational environment to make graduates career ready. Need: In addition to building upgrades, the signature project of the facilities cornerstone will be the construction of a new Integrated Research and Innovations Center enabling more interdisciplinary research and development. It will feature flexible lab space and advanced analytical and imaging equipment to model, simulate and visualize large diverse data sets. Together, these improvements increase hands-on research opportunities for students and facilitate the work of our renowned scientists, faculty and artists.

The formal, public kickoff of Inspiring Futures: Invest in the University of Idaho will take place April 28, in the Kibbie Dome on the Moscow campus. The campaign will conclude in 2014, the 125th anniversary of the university’s founding.
