UI VandalStore Team Creates Book Scholarship for Employees

MOSCOW, Idaho – Since it’s opening in October 2011, baristas at the VandalStore Starbucks have been donating their tips to the University of Idaho “Found Money Fund.” Now that money has come back to three employees in the form of book scholarships.

“We’re extremely excited about this opportunity to promote one of our core ideologies, ‘Student Success,’” said Scott McDonald, VandalStore general manager. “There is no better way to model that ideology than starting with our own VandalStore team. Through this fund, the team will be leaving a legacy at the University of Idaho.”

When the Starbucks first opened, customers naturally wanted to leave tips, but university employees are unable to accept them. McDonald said the barista team looked for an alternative solution and decided to donate their would-be tips to the Found Money Fund created by Terry Armstrong and Carol Yenni, who stipulated the endowment—which started with three cents—will begin granting scholarships in 2089.

Recently, with the help of the University of Idaho Foundation, the “VandalStore Book Scholarship Fund” was created. Contributions were redirected to the new endowment and are funding book scholarships for employees this semester.

Contributions to the foundation have totaled $8,996, with $3,316 going towards the newly created “VandalStore Book Scholarship Fund.” The fund is expected to be fully endowed when it reaches $25,000 and will become a perpetual scholarship for the university.

Starting this semester, the VandalStore awarded three $100 book scholarships to eligible students employed at the VandalStore. Current plans are to award scholarships for both spring and fall semesters.

The VandalStore is the official store of the University of Idaho and is dedicated to Student Success. Purchases at the VandalStore directly support the University of Idaho.
