Parma Fruit Field Day Spotlights Research Sept. 6

PARMA, Idaho – Peaches, nectarines, apples and grapes will be among the stars during the University of Idaho Parma Research and Extension Center’s Annual Fruit Field Day Sept. 6.
Several hundred visitors flock to the free field day each year to taste the fruits grown at the center’s pomology orchard and vineyard site at 31727 Parma Road, Parma, Idaho 83660. The pomology site is approximately 2.5 miles from the extension center’s main site.
Hosted by Essie Fallahi, the center’s internationally known researcher, the event begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.
The field day offers orchardists, gardeners and others the chance to see the results of Fallahi’s research focusing on table grape trellis and canopy systems, high-density apple plantings, variety trials and new fruit development.
Little known fruits grown experimentally at Parma’s orchard and vineyard site include jujube and haskaps, and more widely known fruits such as Asian pairs, quince and persimmons.
The center has been operated since 1925 by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station and University of Idaho Extension.
Potato, onion, grains, hops, mint and other crops, in addition to fruit, are the focus of research at the Parma Research and Extension Center.
The center is supported financially by a novel, five-year agreement with the J.R. Simplot Co.; Idaho’s potato, wheat, barley and other commodity commissions; and federal, state and private funding.
