I AM Heidi Hugunin
I AM REACHING FOR NEW HEIGHTS. I chose the University of Idaho because Moscow offers the perfect balance of academic and recreational opportunities. As a lifelong resident I knew that by going to Idaho I’d have easy access to all the outdoor recreation that I love doing: climbing, kayaking, running and teleskiing. With a 55-foot climbing wall in the Student Rec Center, I don’t even have to leave campus to enjoy one of my favorite hobbies. The small town feel of Moscow and the natural beauty of campus make Idaho the perfect playground for a person like me.
As I prepare for a career as a conservation biologist that same access to the outdoors has proved invaluable to my education. In my area of study there are a lot of things that just can’t be learned in a classroom. I’ve had the opportunity to learn as I helped contribute to vital research and I’ve met a lot of interesting people along the way. Thanks to my hands-on learning experience and my adventures outside of classroom, my time in Moscow has been fun and rewarding. I can’t wait to see what is next.
Where are you from?
I grew up in the small, quaint town of Salmon, Idaho!
What do you plan to do when you graduate?
I am planning on pursuing a career in conservation biology. I love the outdoors and being able to do just get out and explore, so I definitely need to live in a town where there are endless recreational opportunities.
How is the University of Idaho helping you to achieve your goals?
I chose the University of Idaho because they are known for their outstanding programs and they have a good reputation—especially with my family and friends. I had heard wonderful things about their science program and everything that I’ve heard is true. The University definitely lived up to its expectations. It’s nice to be in a program that’s not too overcrowded. I feel like what I say and do matter. I’m making a difference and learning to be a leader—and this is a tool that will take me anywhere in life.
Do you have any comments about your program?
Just that I am in a wonderful program with amazing, diverse people. Every day I am captivated by the teachers and other students around me.
