These facilities support the state’s billion-dollar beef industry and help train students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Facilities also support the Washington-Idaho-Montana-Utah Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine (WIMU). Most offer student internships and opportunities for research.

University of Idaho addresses needs of Idaho’s beef cattle industry. We have a diverse and distributed network of teaching, research and extension faculty.

Over 7,700 ranch families in Idaho produce $2.4 billion in cash receipts. Beef is the second largest agricultural sector in the state. Regionally, Idaho ranks first in cattle and calves and second in number of beef cows and fed cattle.

Over 30 faculty on the Moscow campus, at research stations and in UI Extension counties work on issues concerning the beef industry. Faculty collaborate on planning, implementing and evaluating research and extension programs through the UI Extension Land and Livestock team and the University of Idaho Rangeland Center.

Animal nutrition, disease transmission and control, animal product quality, genetics and molecular biology related studies rely on these livestock:

• 110 milking cows
• 60 head of Charolais in the teaching beef herd
• 120 breeding ewes and 67 rams — purebred Suffolk and Cheviots
