Rick Fletcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at University of Idaho. He taught high school chemistry, physics and math for a period before entering graduate school.
Rick’s teaching interests at UI are focused on the entry level of chemistry education in university and on the transition from the high school science experience to college. He helped write the Idaho State Teaching Standards in chemistry and also the standards for Idaho general science K-12. He also coordinates the dual enrollment program in chemistry for UI and has run summer courses for high school chemistry teachers in the Pacific Northwest.
Rick’s expertise in chemistry and his work with teachers and high schools are vital to this project. His knowledge and experience will inform the research methods and analysis, and Rick will contribute to innovations to improve science achievement in Idaho.
Beyond his involvement on the Interdisciplinary STEM Advisory Team, Rick is studying the success of Idaho high school graduates in beginning chemistry courses to determine how student performance depends on the content training of Idaho high school STEM teachers.
