Anne Liu Kern is an assistant professor in Science Education in the University of Idaho College of Education. She also holds an interdisciplinary faculty position with the UI Environmental Science Program. Dr. Kern teaches courses to prepare pre-service teachers for teaching science and integrating STEM in content and graduate courses in Educational Research and Science Education. She earned her PhD. in Curriculum and Instruction-Science Education, at the University of Minnesota in 2007.
For 10 years prior to entering graduate school, she taught High School chemistry in Oregon and conducted chemistry research on water quality and Environmental Protection Agency projects.
Dr. Kern’s current research projects include providing Professional Development opportunities for Elementary School teachers in integrating STEM with literacy strategies, the development of place based education practices for STEM, and exploring high school and college students’ conceptual understanding of basic chemistry topics.
Dr. Kern brings her experience teaching STEM in public schools to the Interdisciplinary STEM Advisory Team. She looks forward to using results of the research project to provide recommendations for and the design of teacher education program for enhancing STEM content in public schools.
