Hello, my name is Jill Kellogg-Serna. I’m the Director of Study Abroad & Exchange Programs at the University of Idaho. I’m originally from Nampa, Idaho and am a UI alumna. As a UI student studying Psychology and Spanish, I studied abroad with USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium) in San Sebastian for a semester. This was my first experience abroad (except for Canada), so I can relate to many UI students who haven’t been abroad before. This experience gave me the travel bug and made me realize my passion for learning languages and about other cultures. After graduating from the UI, I went to work for a French vacation company, Club Med, hoping to be stationed abroad. I was sent to Florida but worked with people from all over the world and improved the French language I had started learning as a part of my Spanish degree at the UI. Next I went to France to nanny for 9 months then made it back to the Basque Country in Spain, Bilbao this time, to nanny and teach English for a year. I also met my husband while living in Bilbao. We moved back to the U.S. in 2000, and I started searching for a job within International Education as I couldn’t wait to get more U.S. students out into the world, having the kinds of experiences that had changed my life when I went abroad. I started working in the UI Study Abroad Office in 2001 and have been here ever since. Through work and personal travel I’ve been to Chile, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, The Netherlands, and Thailand. My husband and I have a toddler so in my free time I love spending time with them, doing yoga, trying new foods, meeting new people from all over the world and traveling and learning as much from that as I can.
