University Honors Program Admission

The University Honors Program (UHP) encourages all qualified applicants to apply for admission. Please carefully read the admission and application information below, and apply as a first-year, transfer, international, or current UI student.

Applicants will be notified by email with an admission decision within one to two weeks following receipt of their completed application. If you have questions, please contact us at honors@uidaho.edu or (208) 885-6147.

To receive priority consideration for Honors Program Scholarships and WUEs, applicants must be admitted to the UI and UHP by the financial aid deadline. At the latest, applications MUST be submitted online at least five days prior to the beginning of each semester.

Interested in talking to a current Honors Student? Our Honors Student Ambassadors are here to help answer your questions.

First-year students will be entering the UI immediately following graduation from high school even though they may have completed university or community college courses.

Initial admission decisions are based on a correlation between cumulative, unweighted, accredited high school GPA and the highest ACT or SAT scores as approximated in our GPA, ACT, and SAT correlation chart.

Applicants who meet the initial admission index will be asked to submit four short compositions (one to two double-spaced paragraphs) which describe significant learning experiences and perspectives. If you do not receive the emailed composition topics after checking your “spam” folder and verifying your email address, contact honors@uidaho.edu. Your application is not considered complete until the UHP has received your initial application and your four short compositions.

If you do not meet initial admission requirements from the GPA, SAT and ACT correlation chart, we still encourage you to complete the application process. After you receive the emailed composition topics, submit the following supplemental information electronically to honors@uidaho.edu:

  • Four brief compositions
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers who can evaluate your academic potential
  • List of your high school activities and accomplishments
  • Paragraph describing why you would like to be a member of the Honors Program. Include information on honors or advanced courses taken in high school, and any specific circumstances you would like for us to consider in our admission decision

If you are home-schooled or from a non-accredited high school, we may ask you to provide letters of recommendation from two teachers to supplement your application.

Current UI students with a 3.5 or higher UI cumulative GPA, after completion of 15 or more credits and a grade of B or better in English 102 qualify for automatic admission to the UHP. First-semester students may apply at the end of the semester after grades have been recorded on their transcript. In lieu of first semester grades, midterm grades and high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores may be considered for preliminary admission. Students who are not currently enrolled in English 102, or whose test scores make them exempt from English 102, must submit an essay from a University of Idaho course or may request to have the composition topics sent to them.

Current UI Students Who Were Admitted Previously to the Honors Program

Students who have allowed their UHP membership to lapse or did not enroll in the required 3-credit honors course during their first semester, must reactivate their application by submitting a new, online application. Students who meet the admission requirements for current UI students as described above with a 3.5 GPA and a B or better in English 102 will be readmitted to the UHP.

  • Who have English as their second language and graduated from a non-English-based high school are welcomed as applicants. International students must be admitted to the UI before being considered for admission to the UHP. To help us evaluate your fit for our Honors Program, in addition to the online application, please submit the following information electronically to honors@uidaho.edu:
    • High school GPA, as calculated by UI Admissions
    • TOFEL score and/or other English competency tests and scores
    • SAT or ACT test scores (if you have taken these tests)
    • Four brief compositions (as described on the composition topics and guidelines)
    • Two letters of recommendation from teachers (optional)
    • List of your high school activities and accomplishments
    • Paragraph describing why you would like to be a member of the Honors Program. Include information on honors or advanced courses taken in high school, and any specific circumstances that you would like us to consider in our admission decision.

  • Who have English as their first language and who graduated from an English-based high school may apply as a first-year student or may apply as an international student. International students must be admitted to the UI before being considered for admission to the UHP.

Transfer Students are students who have taken community college or university credits after graduating from high school.

For transfer admission consideration, you must be admitted to the University of Idaho, received a 3.3 transfer GPA, and earned a B or better in English 102.  If you have not taken English 102, you will need to submit two writing samples that you feel best demonstrate your academic competence. These writing samples will override the English 102 requirement.

For a student to be considered an active member, you are required to be enrolled in a minimum of 3 honors credits your first semester in the Honors program.
