Jason Dykstra

Prior to joining the University of Idaho College of Law for the 2020-21 academic year, Professor Dykstra taught and served as the Assistant Director the Legal Research and Writing Program at Concordia University School of Law.  Prior to teaching full-time, Professor Dykstra taught for two years as an Adjunct Professor. 

Professor Dykstra brings almost two decades of civil practice experience primarily focused on litigation to the classroom.  Prior to joining Concordia University, Professor Dykstra practiced with Meuleman Mollerup, LLP in Boise, Idaho. His primary practice areas included commercial litigation of real property, employment, and construction disputes.  Professor Dykstra also practiced with Sasser & Inglis, P.C. in Boise, Idaho. His practice primarily focused on insurance law and bad faith defense, intellectual property rights, and business transactions.  A Montana native, Professor Dykstra practiced for five years in Great Falls, Montana.  

Based on his broad civil practice experience, Professor Dykstra developed the innovative Litigation Planning & Drafting course that he will teach at the University of Idaho in the Spring of 2021.  This course is an elective upper division course designed to help students acquire the writing and research skills to transition from law school to the practice of law. 

In addition to teaching, Professor Dykstra researches, writes, and presents on legal education and improving the law school curriculum.   

Most recently, his article, Teasing the Arc of Electric Spark: Fostering and Teaching Creativity in the Law School Curriculum, was published in the Wyoming Law Review in 2020.  Professor Dykstra also periodically contributes essays for the legal writing column in The Advocate, the official publication of the Idaho State Bar. 

Professor Dykstra lives in Boise with his wife, dog, and tabby cat.  He enjoys recreating in the Boise foothills on his mountain bike, road riding in the Treasure Valley, and skiing in beautiful Idaho.  He also enjoys making gourmet meals, playing music with friends, and volunteer work for local non-profits.
