Bicycle Security

Upon purchasing a bicycle, we recommend you take a photo of your bicycle and write down the serial number to be kept in a safe place. While you're at it, ride down to our office at 1006 Railroad Street so we can help you register your bike with the Moscow Police Department. We'll cover the $7 fee, save you a trip downtown and help you fill out the short form! These simple steps greatly increase the chances of recovery if your bike is lost or stolen.

Proper Locking Technique

The best way to help prevent bicycle theft is to always lock your bike when leaving it unattended — even if only for a few minutes. When locking your bike to a bike rack on campus it is important that you use a quality bike lock. For high security, use a U-lock and a cable lock to together. It is recommended to first lock your frame and front tire to the bike rack using the U-lock. Then as an extra precaution, use the cable lock to connect your back tire to the frame and if possible the rack.

Free Bike Registration

Registering your bicycle with the Moscow Police Department (MPD) improves the odds of recovering your bike if it’s ever lost or stolen. Ordinarily, bicycle registration costs $7 and can be done at the downtown MPD station (118 E 4th Street). Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) can save you a trip and $7, however, if you bring your bicycle to our office at the corner of Sweet Avenue and Railroad Street (1006 Railroad Street) during regular business hours. We'll even help you fill out the registration form, if you'd like. We’ll cover the $7 cost and deliver the completed form to MPD.

Reporting Your Bike Stolen

If your bike is missing, please call the PTS office at 208-885-6424 to make sure it has not been impounded. If your bicycle has indeed been stolen, your next step will be to call the Moscow Police Department at 208-885-COPS (2677) and file a report. If your bike was registered, it'll make it a lot easier for MPD to identify and potentially recover!
