Sampling Agricultural Odors

PNW0595

December 31, 2007

Agricultural odors can be quite problematic for livestock producers, particularly when the neighbors begin to complain. Monitoring these unpleasant smells can help producers to gauge their severity and track the success of mitigation efforts. Unfortunately, it is very difficult, expensive and time consuming to determine an odor's exact composition. This 2008 PNW helps you to navigate its evaluation by discussing odor measurement (tests and equipment used, including those reliant on the human nose), sampling recommendations and the efficacy of facility monitoring. Two handy appendices provide an odor data sheet template and a list of monitoring-equipment suppliers.
