4-H Youth Development

In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us. We are America's largest youth development organization — empowering nearly six million young people across the U.S. with the skills to lead for a lifetime.

Experiential learning is the cornerstone of 4-H, where members learn by doing. Youth will expand their knowledge and gain leadership skills through involvement in local clubs, follow their interests through specific project enrollment, and will have opportunities to showcase their achievements.

The information below provides specific information about 4-H. Remember to follow Latah County 4-H on Facebook for additional updates.

4-H programs can be found in every county in Idaho and are made up of youth from cities, suburbs, towns and rural settings. The 4-H program welcomes participants without regard to race, creed, gender, marital status, disability, economic or ethnic backgrounds.

  • Offered on a year-round basis, 4-H is open to youth ages 5-18
  • Cloverbuds is a non-competitive, educational program for young 4-H members ages 5-7
  • Youth who are ages 8-18 may join as a member
  • Provided they are enrolled in high school, individuals over 18 who have special needs are eligible to participate in 4-H
  • Adults, who are 19 or older, may join as volunteers

4-H recognizes the age of the individual on Jan. 1 of the current 4-H year. Eligibility established on Jan. 1 will remain in effect for the entire 4-H year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30). Youth members exhibit their projects based on their '4-H age' within the following age divisions:

  • Cloverbuds — 5-7 years old
  • Junior — 8-10 years old
  • Intermediate — 11-13 years old
  • Senior — 14-18 years old

Cloverbuds is a noncompetitive educational program for youth ages 5-7 and is designed to introduce young children to 4-H in a fun, noncompetitive way.

Cloverbuds attend club meetings and functions and use county or state publications. They may not participate in large animal, ATV or shooting sports projects.

Latah County Fair

Cloverbuds do not display or sell animals at fair and are not required to complete or exhibit their book. A club display of Cloverbuds books at the fair is acceptable. However, the books are not judged and are only awarded for participation.
