Faculty Advisor Transition Process

Undergraduates transition to a faculty advisor specific to their degree area at different times in their academic career depending on their major.

Below are the advisee transition plans for each degree program in the College of Engineering:

Biological Engineering
Biological Engineering majors will work with a professional advisor during their first year at U of I and transition to faculty advisors in the spring of their freshman year. Students should meet with their new advisors in the spring advising period to register for the following fall.

Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering majors will work with a professional advisor during their first year at U of I and transition to faculty advisors in the spring of their freshman year. Students should meet with their new advisors in the spring advising period to register for the following fall.

Civil Engineering
CE majors work with a professional advisor through their first semester only. The professional advisor should notify students of their new faculty advisor assignment during their fall advising appointments. Official assignment of faculty advisors takes place in early March by the CEE Administrative Coordinator, who also sends an e-mail to each student with information about their new advisor. Students meet with their new advisors in the spring advising period to register for the next fall.

Computer Engineering
Computer Engineering majors work with a professional advisor for their first semester at U of I or until they are enrolled in MATH 175. The professional advisor should email ECE's Administrative Coordinator with the list of students currently enrolled in MATH 175 (in early October or in early March), so they may be transitioned to a faculty advisor for the subsequent spring or fall advising periods, respectively.

Computer Science
Computer Science majors will work with their professional advisors until all required 100-level CS courses are completed with grades of C or better. If a student completes those requirements in the spring semester, they will be assigned to their new faculty advisor in the summer and have their first advising appointment with their new advisor in the fall advising period. If a student completes these requirements in the fall semester, they will be assigned to their new faculty advisor during the winter break and meet for their first advising appointment with their new advisor in the spring advising period.

Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity majors will work with their professional advisors until they have completed both CS 120 and MATH 176.

Electrical Engineering
Electrical  Engineering majors work with a professional advisor for their first semester at U of I or until they are enrolled in MATH 175. The professional advisor should email ECE's Administrative Coordinator with the list of students currently enrolled in MATH 175 (in early October or in early March), so they may be transitioned to a faculty advisor for the subsequent spring or fall advising periods, respectively.

Mechanical Engineering
ME majors are advised by a professional advisor in their first semester or until they complete MATH 175. A student who is currently enrolled in MATH 175 will work with the professional advisor to register for next semester and then should transition to a faculty advisor. The professional advisor should email ME’s Administrative Coordinator with the list of students currently enrolled in MATH 175 (in early October or in early March), so they may be transitioned to a faculty advisor for the subsequent spring or fall advising periods, respectively.

Computer Science (starting AY 22/23)
Computer Science majors will work with their professional advisors until all required 100-level CS courses are completed with grades of C or better. If a student completes those requirements in the spring semester, they will be assigned to their new faculty advisor in the summer and have their first advising appointment with their new advisor in the fall advising period. If a student completes these requirements in the fall semester, they will be assigned to their new faculty advisor during the winter break and meet for their first advising appointment with their new advisor in the spring advising period.

Cybersecurity (starting AY 22/23)
Cybersecurity majors will work with their professional advisors until they have completed both CS 120 and MATH 176.
