Hazardous Energy Control Courses

Hazardous Energy Control for Supervisors

University employees who are required to service or maintain machinery and equipment can face a significant risk of serious injury or even death if related energy sources are not identified and properly controlled as the first step in the maintenance process. This classroom course will provide employees with a thorough understanding of the university's hazardous energy control standard and the elements that must be included in all written hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) programs.

This course is presented by EHS and is required for supervisors, forepersons or others who may be responsible for developing and implementing written hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) programs for their departments/divisions.

Lockout/Tagout - Affected Employees

This classroom course will help ensure employees are able to recognize lockout/tagout devices they might encounter, understand their purpose, determine when they are in use, and understand the danger of violating or disregarding lockout/tagout procedures.

This course may be presented by EHS or supervisors and is required for employees who are not authorized to use lockout/tagout procedures, but who either operate machinery or equipment that can be locked or tagged out or who work in an area where lockout/tagout procedures are routinely used.

Lockout/Tagout - Authorized Employees

This classroom course will help ensure employees understand the concept and importance of controlling hazardous energy sources when servicing or maintaining machinery or equipment and provide them with an explanation of the specific information that must be included in written lockout/tagout programs.

This course may be presented by EHS or supervisors and is required for employees who are authorized to use the procedures and equipment described in their unit's written lockout/tagout program.

Lockout/Tagout Training

This online course covers the control of hazardous energy and work under the protection of a lockout/tagout permit. Topics include the purpose of lockout/tagout programs, limitations of tags, and hazards of operating machines or equipment that have been locked or tagged out. This course is provided for use as refresher training only, i.e., one of the three classroom courses listed above must be completed before this on-line course may be accessed.
