Dr. Jerry Franklin on "The Forks in the Forestry Road and Which One Will You Take?"

Dr. Jerry Franklin, professor emeritus of forest ecosystems in the College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington where he has taught ecosystem management and science, silviculture, landscape ecology and forest ecology. He received his B.S. and M.S. in forest management from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in botany and soils from Washington State University. He began his career as a research forester at the US Forest Service’ Pacific Northwest Research Station where he worked on silvicultural topics, primarily tree regeneration. After a term as a program manager in the National Science Foundation, he returned to the US PNW Station as a project leader and chief plant ecologist. During this time he was a leader of a scientific team that characterized the ecological nature and importance of old-growth forest ecosystems. 

Dr. Franklin has been an author on over 500 scientific articles and 12 books. His most recent book is “Ecological Forest Management”, co-authored with two colleagues. Franklin has received numerous honors including honorary doctorate degrees from Lakehead and Simon Fraser Universities, the Barrington Moore Award from the Society of American Foresters, 2016 Eminent Ecologist award from the Ecological Society of America, LaRoe Award from the Society of Conservation Biology and the 2006 Heinz Award for the Environment. He has served on and has led numerous scientific panels that have advised state and federal agencies, U.S. Congress, the White House and the Province of British Columbia on forestry issues. Over the last decade, much of his time has been spent advising federal, state, Tribal Nations and private landowners on ecological forest management.
