Andrew Rypel - "California on the edge: using conservation science to forge a future for native fishes"

April 19th
1:30 - 2:20p.m.
College of Natural Resources Room 10

Andrew is from Milwaukee Wisconsin where he grew up as an avid angler of fishes of all kinds. He has degrees in environmental science, fisheries, and ecology from Saint Louis University, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama, respectively. Since receiving his PhD in 2008, he has conducted research on fisheries and mussel populations in floodplain rivers of southeastern USA, trout streams in the Appalachian mountains, Midwestern lakes, and even the coral reefs in the Caribbean and Africa. His research is centered on understanding effects of global change on fisheries and aquatic ecosystems, but importantly on developing novel conservation approaches to ameliorate these effects. He is currently an Associate Professor and the Peter B. Moyle and California Trout Chair of Coldwater Fish Ecology in the Department of Wildlife, Fish & Conservation Biology at UC Davis. He is also the Associate Director for the Center for Watershed Sciences, a hub for interdisciplinary water research on campus. Andrew is particularly passionate about the land grant mission of UC Davis and about incorporating diverse stakeholders and students into science and fish conservation.
