Ed Bowles - "Opportunities, tensions and sweet spots: pathways to resolve entrenched natural resource conflicts"

Ed Bowles has led the fish side of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife since the early 2000s. His oversight includes an annual budget of approximately $90M administered through nine programs and over 850 employees. Ed spent the first half of his career with Idaho Department of Fish and Game as a research scientist, research supervisor and anadromous fish manager.

Accomplishments on the freshwater side include developing and implementing key policies directing native fish conservation and hatchery management, lower Columbia River harvest reform, federal ESA recovery planning, and helping ensure the Federal Columbia River Power System meets their fish conservation and recovery responsibilities.

On the salty side, Ed oversees the agency’s Marine Program and was the State’s lead on developing a system of marine reserves and marine protected areas. Ed represented the west coast as an advisor to the Obama Administration on the National Ocean Policy and represents Oregon on the West Coast Ocean Alliance. He also represented the Governor on the Ocean Policy Advisory Council. Ed is a long-standing member of the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission and serves as a Commissioner for Oregon.

Ed has graduate and undergraduate degrees in fisheries science from the University of Idaho (MS 1985) and the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (BS 1981).
